Take a closer look at some of our favorite French Cottage features:
A search for their dream home in the French countryside led an artistic couple to a venerable farm in Burgundy. Reshuffling their belongings to include meaningful furniture pieces and treasures from brocantes, Meine Fernhout and Marijtje van der Horst’s refurbished interiors are a delightful blend of their previous homes and lives. “This is the first house we bought together,” says Marijtje. “Decorating it was special—my greatest joy.”
Self-proclaimed ambassadors to a centuries-old medieval estate, Matthew and Jitske Poventud have created a charmed life for themselves, their family, and a constant flow of houseguests. “We want our guests to experience life on this estate, the nature, the tranquility,” says Jitske. “Many people tell us coming here feels like coming home—and that’s a wonderful compliment.”
With a keen eye and nurturing instincts, a Dutch florist put down roots in the heart of Burgundy and cultivated sun-drenched spaces where her family could blossom. Weathered finishes and antique furnishings create an airy ambience that seems ideally suited to the owners. “The house had a wonderful atmosphere, the spirit of a true family home,” says Ita Bourcier. “Exactly what we were looking for.”
