A Toast to Christmas Past

A Toast to Christmas Past

Jennifer and Mitchell Britt of Huntsville, Alabama, have created a welcoming home that truly shines at Christmastime, both indoors and out. The eye-catching adornment festooning the front door has become a harbinger of the holiday season for their whole downtown neighborhood. This forty-year tradition was inspired by the family’s visit to Williamsburg when the children were young. To make the Colonial-era surround, it takes hundreds of magnolia leaves, gathered from their farm in the southern part of the state, appropriately named Magnolia Glen. Son Lance adds the fresh fruit—110 apples, two lemons, and a central pineapple, the traditional symbol of hospitality. Jennifer creates a cranberry wreath, using four large bags of berries to cover the form, topping it with magnolia leaves and a “bow” of apples.
