The Legacy of Campbell House

Campbell House

The mansion was approximately six thousand square feet when its owners moved in. They added another four thousand square feet over the years to accommodate their three sons and a variety of gala social events. It was here that the Campbells hobnobbed with the rich and famous and entertained President Ulysses S. Grant and Mrs. Grant, herself a St. Louis native. Guests enjoyed sumptuous multiple-course dinners, followed by receptions and dancing in the parlor. Inside the Campbell House Museum, it is easy to imagine those festive occasions today. The building showcases hundreds of the family’s belongings, including china and silver, paintings, furnishings, and clothing. One of the more remarkable items is a circa-1855 rosewood square grand piano. It sits in the parlor beneath a portrait of Virginia Campbell, who played the elaborately carved instrument. The property also displays two of the Campbells’ monogrammed carriages behind the mansion.
