When Danah and Paul Fisher purchased their elegant two-story house on St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans’ Milan neighborhood, they found that, although a dozen families had lived there since its construction in the mid-1800s by affluent steamboat agent Cornelius Bicknell Payne, the building’s footprint remained essentially unchanged.
