By the late eighteenth to early nineteenth centuries, English potters had perfected their own processes for producing stoneware that mimicked costly blue-and-white Chinese porcelain. It was known as transferware due to the printing method in which tissue paper was laid atop engraved copper plates covered with a film of cobalt oxide. The paper was then applied to crockery, transferring the illustration.
