Over two decades, Almanzo built a ten-room farmhouse, complete with a kitchen tailored to Laura’s petite stature. In the couple’s golden years, their daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, one of the foremost female journalists of her day, bought her parents a mail-order cottage clad with custom fieldstone siding. Laura and Almanzo remained in the Rock House until 1936, when they returned to the farmhouse. Open for tours from March through mid-November, both dwellings have been painstakingly preserved.
