Makings of Romance: Crafting Valentine Cottages

Left: A closer view of this house reveals bright red tinsel lining. Right: Handmade valentines bear images of hearts and the words “Two hearts, one dream.”Author Ana Claudia Antunes writes, “True love is like little roses, sweet, fragrant in small doses.” Captivated by this sensibility, artisan Maribel Polcano of White Berry Lane incorporates inspiration from the English countryside into charmingly designed papier-mâché cottages fashioned from vintage scrapbooking finds. Heart-shaped embellishments, along with tiny twinkling saplings and wreaths, are perfectly placed upon each unique abode, creating a welcoming warmth reminiscent of a significant someone held most dear. Edged and trimmed to perfection, these timeless miniature dioramas garnish a table’s center or deck a glowing mantle, enchanting all whose gaze falls upon them.
