The Lovely Lilacs of Mackinac Island

The property of the Hotel Iroquois, a waterfront Victorian mansion, is planted with Syringa vulgaris, or common lilacs, as well as the smaller, stronger-scented “Palibin” variety. As the flowers proliferated, so did their fame, and in 1949 a group started a lilac festival that has blossomed into a ten-day even that draws thousands of visitors from around the world each June.
