Greenery brings classic charm to a mantel. Unexpected touches of color are especially pleasing to the eye against an otherwise neutral backdrop.
The castle, surrounded by breathtaking woods and green meadows, has a storied history. Of the four original towers, two remain—one from the twelfth century and the other from the fifteenth century. The main building, situated between the towers, and the farmhouse date from the nineteenth century.
“From what we know, the castle was last rebuilt around 1940,” says homeowner Hubert Bettan. “Our goal was to maintain the spirit of the house and keep it simple and natural.”
Extensive renovations, from windows and façades to a garage converted into an atelier, were meticulously executed with respect for the beautiful details and original atmosphere of the castle. Regional white stone, rustic parquet floors, and sections of salvaged wallpaper throughout pay homage to the castle’s rich historic integrity.
After three years of work, the couple has brought every room back to life, and the enormous fortress has become a family home with a warm and loving atmosphere. But their work is not quite done. They have plans for more renovations and pop-up shops and events.
“The real challenge was to integrate our own taste with the old elements,” says homeowner Isabelle Dubois-Dumée. “Our aim was to have a place that is living.”
