Hygge Christmas: Tidings from an Arctic Eden

Left: A basket of natural elements, including pinecones and white flowers, is hung by a green ribbon before a window. Right: A wooden advent calendar takes the form of a set of diminutive drawers, one to mark each day of the countdown to Christmas. In other parts of the world, Scandinavia counts down the days until Christmas by means of an Advent calendar. This three-dimensional variety, above right, conceals chocolate treats in the confines of its drawers, each one awaiting the hands of eager children. Within a woven basket, above left, paperwhites, pinecones, and pepper berry mingle. Such an arrangement may hang on the door to welcome family members who have journeyed to share a traditional feast.
