The Gentle Care of Fine Linens

Fine Linens

Cleanse with Appropriate Techniques
Beloved heirlooms are wisely placed in the hands of textile professionals, but most cotton, linen, and cotton-linen-blend varieties can be tended at home. For delicate fabrics, as well as those with intricate handwork or trim, hand-washing in the sink with warm water and a mild detergent formulated for textiles is the safest option. Sturdier linens can withstand the tumble of a washing machine on the gentle cycle. Oxygenated bleach is acceptable for most pieces, but chlorine bleach is not recommended. Handle wet articles with care, squeezing out excess water without twisting or wringing. Allow antique or fragile linens to air-dry.

Pamper Your Bed
Wash sheets each week in warm water, turning patterned pillowcases inside out to keep colors vibrant. Freshly pressed sheets feel luxuriously new again, but many modern fabric blends are supple and inviting pulled straight from the dryer. For favorable results, launder mattress covers, pillow protectors, and comforters monthly. Fluff cushions daily, and wash them, two at a time, at least semiannually. Pillows and comforters can last for many years, but they should be replaced when the edges start to fray or the filling loses its loft.
