For her part, Jan Karon prefers the sweet simplicity of savoring floral arrangements to the full, pinching off the heads of blossoms when they pass their prime. She scatters these desiccated blooms among baskets for natural ventilation as the petals continue to lose moisture. Occasionally stirring the mélange with her fingers not only aids in the drying process but also proves to be nearly meditative in its calming effect. With memories in the making, her handmade potpourri serves as a lasting tribute both to the ephemeral loveliness of flowers and to the matchless joy they bring.
