Eventually, Jackie sold the bakery, freeing herself to follow other pursuits. She wrote articles for food and travel publications, authored her memoir, and returned often enough to the city on the Seine, it made sense to buy a home there. “I found this old, unrenovated apartment belonging to a woman who had lived there since the 1940s,” she explains. “It didn’t even have a proper bathroom—the shower was in the hallway—but the mouldings and the chevron floor were in near-perfect condition.” Besotted with her find, she purchased it and began to decorate.
