If April showers bring a gift of new rain boots, celebrate the promise of blooms with this easy centerpiece. Choose a vase that is at least an inch shorter than the shaft of the boot, and fill the vessel with water and a handful of fresh-cut stems. Any spring flowers will do for this project, but tulips are my favorite. Slipped into the shoe, the showy blossoms cascade gracefully over the rim, giving the arrangement a sense of easy elegance.
The bouquet above commemorated the day we purchased pink-and-white-polka-dot Wellies for my daughters. So smitten were my girls (ages 4 and 6 at the time), they sported their new footwear for a week—rain or shine. Years later, this posy reminds me of a delightful season of life, when the pitter-patter of little feet filled our home and there was no greater pleasure after a rainstorm than venturing outdoors to dance in the puddles.
