I'm confused, or maybe just typically out of touch with what's going on with youth today.

PETA is People for Ethical Treatment of Animals. Are these young ladies engaged in some sort of protest against abuse of animals, or is this some new extreme sport?

That's the group, MourningGlorie. They put together a commercial that they intended on showing during Superbowl. The slogan is "Vegetarians have better s3x." It showed supermodels in lingerie doing provocative things with vegetables. In the end, the censors deemed it too risque to air. But the attention they drew from that publicity alone was huge. If you go to their website, the commercial is there to view, followed by a more serious video message.

I saw parts of it but had to turn it off. It was so bizarre it was laughable. Honestly. Broccoli??!!! Lettuce is s3xy??

I keep telling all of you, Guinness is a FOOD GROUP all unto itself.

While hating to be a nay-sayer, I'm bound in conscience to admit that more often than not I'm disappointed in a film after having read the book on which it's based.

A couple of notable exceptions were "The Prince of Tides" and the excellent recent rendering of "Love in the Time of Cholera." There was also ONE pretty good, and rather faithful to the original, movie made of ONE of John Fowles' novels: "The Collector," done with Terence Stamp and Samantha Eggar back in the sixties.

But now, Michael, faithful to the original or not, let there be no tampering whatsoever with Colin Firth in his wet shirt. Some things are more important than faithfulness to the original....

In my interpretation, the scene in which Darcy swam through the small pond at Pemberly was a symbol for his return to his beloved Pemberly from the town, which he so obviously abhorred. The water washed him, and cleansed him of the contempt he felt for any life outside that of Pemberly. He emerged himself, pure and free from everything he left behind on the far shore. Think of the symbolism of Baptism.

As both a vegetarian and former member of PETA, what questions does anyone have? Bearing in mind that discussion of this would undoubtedly do two things

1. Become a heated exchange of views, probably resulting in arguement.
2. Seriously derail this thread.

Your question presupposes being able to read at leisure rather than on the run or in seized moments while waiting for something else to happen (the bus to reach its destination, for example, or the person at the other end of the phone line to take you off "hold"). Were I ever to enjoy the reading-at-leisure luxury, my sipping potion of choice would be the Cough Medicine of the Gods.

Dubonnet is good too, though--nothing against Dubonnet!

Seeing as how I can't drink alcolhol (irregular heartbeat issue), I'm afraid my drinks of choice while reading are rather tame--hot chocolate, hot tea, chocolate milk (refuse to completely grow up), iced tea, or lemonade. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I wasn't slamming PETA. They do some great work. I know advertisers use s3x to sell - always have and probably always will - I just thought this ad was wee bit OTT (over the top). Although, admittedly, I don't think I'll ever look at veggies as boring ever again! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

While I am certainly no prude (will that be censored?) it is the behaviour and general antics of PETA that caused me to withdraw my membership and support.

I just watched the movie "The Secret Life of Bees" by author Sue Monk Kidd. I quite enjoyed it but I preferred the book.

The casting was great but I felt the movie caputured only the major turning points of the book, the sub-plots were quite lost or none existent. Someone else might have a different view.

You make a great point that I've noticed in movies, too. Although I didn't see The Secret Life of Bees, I've noticed in other movies that subplots are either lost or used as an afterthought. If a book is quite long, then the more likely they are to leave out important characters and story elements. I guess that's unavoidable when you only have about two hours or so in which to tell the whole story. That's why I like mini-series--they can fit more in.

BlueStocking, PETA has sometimes included in their solicitations very graphic and disturbing photos of abused if not tortured animals. It seems that a PETA commercial was aired during the superbowl which included some inappropriate activities with vegetables. Given that I am not a sports fan and don't watch commercials unless they're of frolicking dogs or cats, I didn't see the commercial.

Apparently the photo of girls on some type of strange device were the models in the commercial. I still having figured out what the girls are doing, but now knowing that the jist of the commercial was that vegetarians allegedly have better s -e-x, it's quite apparent that the commercial was in very poor taste.

Lisa's and LavenderBlue's posts were by way of explanation of this strange commercial and venture into whether vegetarians or carnivores are more fulfilled.

Yesterday was a bit bizarre for me, and the bizarreness (if that's a word) resulted in my alternately speeding through some of the things I needed or wanted to do and taking special, rather wary, care about others. It seemed as though almost every time I'd lean over a bit, I'd have a tiny dizzy spell. Since my BP tends to be on the low side, I'm assuming that accounted for it--but I still didn't like it, and was getting through my day in somewhat jerky fashion. A thorough-enough reading into the places this thread had got to was evidently one of the casualties of my speeding modes.

As for making sense--YOU make sense. About the described commercials I'll reserve comment.

I loved the book and thought the casting looked good. Unfortunately I rarely see any non kiddie flicks and hope things turn up on pay per view or HBO. I am glad to hear your account. I must say I didnt care for the Mermaid Chair and heard it was made into a movie for Lifetime I believe with Kim Bassinger.
